GIFTS FOR THE DECORATOR

I am beyond obsessed with BluDot. Their modern powder-coated furniture and home accessories straddle the line between simple and artistic so, so well. My wife actually bought me a pair of these candle holders last Christmas and I was impressed, you guys.

I happen to really love them because I have insider information that their work environment – for office, retail, and manufacturing line positions – is bar none. They treat their employees well and that really means something to me.

Don’t buy anyone a pet. Never do it. It’s not cool. They don’t want a new responsibility for Hanukkah or Christmas. If you have the urge to gift someone a pet, give them this instead.

These adorable balloon dog sculptures come in an array of colors to match any home decor and they’re just, like, really fun. Who can remain in a bad mood when looking at these guys? No one. Not even The Grinch. Not even I.

I love coffee table books as gifts. They’re expensive (for a book!) so we tend to not buy them for ourselves, making them the perfect gift to give.

This hardcover coffee table style book is full of inspiration and calming photos for your recipient to enjoy over and over again. There’s just something about flipping through a real book of photographs that Pinterest and Kindle can’t compete with. It’s a luxury in itself. Plus it’s heavy as shit so the recipient will mentally clock it as noice.

As always, I appreciate when you shop through my links but I also would really encourage you to shop locally whenever possible. A dollar spent in your local economy is worth so much more than a dollar spent with a global corporation. That said, you do what you need to do. I have a sentimental set of wine glasses from my wife’s aunt. But if I didn’t, I’d have these in every color available. I love them so much.

They’re lightweight but look substantial on display. The muted colorways add a little fun to every bar. If you have a wine and design lover in your life, this is the gift.

Plus they’re from DWR which is known, almost exclusively, for being expensive so that box is going to feel special for the recipient.

GIFTS FOR THE ACTUAL FANCY PERSON

I used to think wine enthusiasts were the most obnoxious snobs on the planet and then the IPA got popular and let us off the hook! Beer drinkers love talking about beer but don’t you dare try to buy them a case of beer. You will not find the one they like. You will think you found the coolest beer and you will be wrong. You are not cool.

One morning, in my early 20s, I stumbled into boy BFF’s bathroom all hungover and discovered Kiehl’s. He had a whole toiletry kit full of little white bottles of magic. I’m not sure what made it feel fancy to me but my first thought was “Is he rich?” Kiehl’s came from the mall and not the drugstore so that made it special. Or maybe it was the branding.

Either way, Kiehl’s products are now my favorite skincare products and I think you should share that love with your friends or yourself.

HOLIDAY DECORATING IDEAS + DIY CRAFTS

This week, I’m showing you how I made an easy upgrade to a cheap light fixture to make it look like an expensive vintage reproduction. Plus, I’m doing a round-up with 60 of my favorite budget schoolhouse lights for decorating your own home!

BUT FIRST, WHAT IS MODERN SCHOOLHOUSE?

I get this question a lot on Instagram since I revealed that my design plan for our California Bungalow is to incorporate more Schoolhouse Design Style into the decor of this home. The term is used rather loosely across the Interior Design community, as it’s technically not a real home style. Rather, Schoolhouse Style actually comes from the use of Schoolhouse Style lighting: electrical light fixtures that were widely used throughout the United States in public school buildings between the 1920s and 1950s.

As explained in this article from This Old House, Schoolhouse light fixtures are known for their milky glass bulb covers. Originally, electric fixtures donned a bare bulb that created a glare. This made for challenges in the classroom, as teachers and students were often blinded by the light. To remedy that problem, lighting designers developed an opaque glass cover that would allow light to penetrate but would soften the light and alleviate the glare issues.

You’ll often see these fixtures in bright finishes or with striped patterns on the globes. This was a common way to add visual interest to the fixtures while maintaining the light defusing properties. The most common DIY associated with Schoolhouse lighting is adding a stripe to the milk glass globe, as seen in this tutorial from Jackie at School of Decorating.

BEYOND THE MILK GLASS SHADE

In its inception, schoolhouse style was mainly used to refer to light fixtures that featured the white glass globe over a light bulb. Over the years, the term Schoolhouse Lighting has evolved to incorporate other styles of light fixtures. In fact, now you’ll find that a quick Google search for Schoolhouse pendants and sconces will reveal a wealth of options that come in glass, metal, and enamelware finishes.

These fixtures lean more industrial – and even a little farmhouse – than traditional schoolhouse but in the design world, they all fall under the same decor style.

The color options have evolved as well. For most schoolhouse fixtures, you’ll find that raw metal, stainless steel, and iron (or black) is a base. However, now you can even find schoolhouse chandeliers that also incorporate other finishes you might use throughout your home, such as antique brass and polished nickel.

HOW TO MIX SCHOOLHOUSE LIGHTING WITH MODERN DECOR

Because these light fixtures often feature cute pops of color, they’re a common favorite among people who are decorating kid’s bedrooms and playrooms. For instance, this kid’s room by Erin Wheeler of Sunny Circle Studio rocks a charming traditional schoolhouse pendant alongside schoolhouse room decor.

See the national parks advertising poster and buffalo plaid throw blanket? Punched with bold primary color accents and warm, worn wood, this space just screams Traditional Schoolhouse style.

Meanwhile, designer Whitney McGregor’s kid’s room, featured in Southern Living, boasts cozy, traditional cottage decor. Even with a Queen Elizabeth-style bed, the schoolhouse factory pendant looks right at home!

So it’s clear that schoolhouse lighting can work in harmony with traditional home decor, but what about a more modern home? How would you use schoolhouse style in a contemporary setting?

Schoolhouse lighting is fairly neutral – it features clean lines, limited adornment, and an industrial vibe. Sp of course it looks great with modern decor as well!

The bottom line: Schoolhouse Light Fixtures are fun. They are nostalgic. They aren’t made for stuffy quarters but can serve a beautiful juxtaposition against a hyper-traditional home.

Two remaining examples? Just look at this kitchen and child’s bedroom designed by Susana of Chango + Co.

Both rooms feature schoolhouse industrial light fixtures yet neither room looks particularly schoolhouse in design. The decorating possibilities with this style of lighting are truly endless!

AFFORDABLE SCHOOLHOUSE LIGHTING

In a moment, I’m going to show you how I turned a standard $25 metal factory flush mount into an enamelware light on a budget.

But if I’m being honest, the DIY upgrade wasn’t necessary. All of the light fixtures I’ve rounded up below look like more expensive fixtures than they are. Many of these pendants and chandeliers are on my list of items to buy when we’re ready to upgrade the remaining lights in our California Bungalow.

As I’ve been slowly decorating our California Bungalow, I’ve made a few little upgrades that have all contributed to a more industrial cottage decorating plan.

First, I built this Schoolhouse Style Wooden Broom. Then I upgraded the entryway storage in our home by creating a small mudroom in the corner of our dining room featuring this Schoolhouse Style Wall Hook Rack. But what I failed to show you on the blog is the biggest upgrade we’d made in this home. I replaced the dining room light within a few weeks after we closed on this house. Here’s what the space looked like before we moved in.

If you look beyond the moving boxes, you can see that the original light fixture in this room was very small. It actually didn’t even illuminate the room. At night, I could barely see to wipe down the table.

To refresh your memory, our dining room is actually the original designated Living Room, based on traditional bungalow floorpans. I explain why I chose to move it around in this post: Our 1924 California Bungalow: Full Home Tour

So the very first design decision I made for this home was to purchase and install a new light. That new light has an industrial modern vibe which lends itself to 1920s period decor and schoolhouse style.

This modern industrial cage light, in olive green, sets the tone for the remainder of our home’s style. Part cottage, part industrial, part modern.

Those styles all gather together and morph into what designers now call “Schoolhouse Modern Style”. For this reason, when I decided to update the ceiling fixture in our small hallway (for the same reason – it barely shines any light), I knew I wanted a vintage schoolhouse look.

Immediately, I fell in love with this original vintage factory pendant I found on 1stdibs. But the price tag was a steep $300. That’s more than I really wanted to spend on the lighting for that tiny space. Also, I’m planning to incorporate this Hygge & West wallpaper into the ceiling of the hallway, so I was worried the grey would just get lost against it.

That’s when inspiration struck and the idea for my $30 Enamelware Factory Pendant DIY was born!

DIY FACTORY LIGHT REPLICA

tools:

STEP ONE – remove the shade from the bulb housing.

STEP TWO – tape just above lower rim of shade + around bulb socket to protect surface from paint.

STEP THREE – paint rim of shade and bulb housing with craft paint. allow to dry. repeat with additional coats, if necessary.

STEP FOUR – remove painter’s tape and spray with clear lacquer.

Once all the paint and lacquer was dry, I allowed it to sit for 24 hours in order to harden. Then I installed it in our bungalow’s hallway and I love it!

Since we’re taking our time with this renovation, we haven’t even updated the paint in here yet. But already, the hallway feels fresh and modern!

Here’s what the hallway looked like before –

You can see how that teeny tiny light was doing absolutely nothing for us. But now, it’s bright!

I still want to add wallpaper above the beadboard and update all the door hardware (in keeping with the home’s historic integrity, don’t worry). Oh! And I also need to decide what color I want to paint the trim and walls throughout the house.

But all those decisions and tasks can be left for another day because right now, I’m basking in the glory of my beautiful, new industrial lighting, including these two fixtures I ordered and installed in our dining room!

Since the dining room leads directly into our hallway – which is the central hub of the rest of the home – consistency in design choices is key to making this home feel collected and maintain flow.

While the 3 light fixtures I’ve added so far aren’t identical, they are all tied together with common finishes and styles.

Furniture under $300

This is the headboard Christine bought me for Christmas a few years ago. I love it with all my heart. It’s tall, so you can stack plush pillows in front of it and it doesn’t get lost. Plus it’s super soft so I don’t even mind leaning against it when I’m working in bed. Five stars!!

I’ve had my eye on this lounge chair and ottoman set for a while now and if I buy anything this weekend, it’s probably going to be this. I love the idea of it in a nursery but I’m actually considering it for my own bedroom. It’s too good to get clothes piled all over so I’ll probably keep it tidy, right?

I just installed this bar cart at a client’s house and it looks so good! It’s simple and fresh but so functional! And right now it’s under $100!

I already own two of these side tables and they are awesome! They go with a ton of decor styles and right now they’re under $70 each, which is a phenomenal price!

If you’ve been looking for a campaign style bedside table, this is your lucky day! This table comes in an array of colors including white, grey, blue, YELLOW, and black.

Speaking of bedside tables, I love it when a quality piece goes on major sale. This is a great side table with built-in storage. And the price is super good!

Buying a faux marble coffee table online can be tricky because the quality could be either fantastic or disappointing. I’m recommending this one because it has great reviews from verified buyers and it’s on sale for under $100!

I’ve been thinking of building a little wooden storage bench to turn the space beside the door in my garage into a little mudroom area. But since the price of this one is so good, I think I’m just going to buy it and leave it behind for the new homeowners to enjoy.

Speaking of benches, I’m a big fan of this bench. It has a very classic modern style and goes so well with a lot of different decor. Whether you’re looking to incorporate more iconic modern designs into your home or just need a simple bench for the end of your guest bed, I really think this is your best deal right now.

As someone who tends to move every few years, I really love furniture that can serve my home in a lot of different capacities. This console table could be a great media cabinet but it would also work well as a buffet or bar cabinet. In a pinch, I’d also use it as a dresser with some squared boxes inside because it’s tall enough. Oh and it’s under $300, so…

THE BEST LIGHTING SALES – Memorial Day 2019

Out with the boob lights! There’s no reason to have outdated flush mounts in your house when you can grab one of these modern fixtures in nearly any finish! Plus, right now they’re under $70!

I just installed this bubble glass pendant over my sink and I love it. I also love that it’s priced under $50 right now!

This bathroom sconce looks like a much more expensive light fixture than it actually is. It’s under $80!

We’re making over our patio right now and I bought this exterior flush mount light fixture to replace the old, rusted one. I paid around $30 for it but right now it’s $23 and that’s an amazing deal! It looks great!

I installed these in my hallway last fall (ORC Fall 2018) and I love them. I just wish I’d waited for this sale because it would’ve saved us about $100.

When I’m working with design clients, the most often requested lighting is a modern ceiling fan that isn’t ugly. They do exist but they’re not cheap. I’ve literally never seen one for under $100 before now. So if you’ve been looking for a new ceiling fan, this is your moment. THE BEST APPLIANCE SALES – Memorial Day 2019

After a decade of over-the-range microwaves, range hoods are back in style! This one is particularly pretty and is priced under $200 right now.

Fun fact about me: When I find something that works well, I stick to it forever. I’ve purchased this exact same Washer and Dryer three times over! Each time we sell our home, we include all the appliances with the sale. Since I love how well these LG washing machines and dryers have functioned for us (not a single service call since 2011), I keep going back to this line over and over. Right now, they’re priced below $1500 for the pair!

This is the fridge we bought last year during the Memorial Day sales and we love it! It’s a counter-depth model which has given us a lot more room to move around our kitchen but we never feel like we’ve sacrificed storage space inside. Right now, it’s $600 off!

When we bought our kitchen appliances last year, we splurged a little on this gas range. At the time, it wasn’t on sale. Now, it’s $200 off. I really wanted a slide in range that didn’t have a big back piece. I love that this stove/oven combo makes our kitchen look a lot more high-end.

To complete the appliance suite, our microwave and dishwasher are also on sale right now!

So.. I really wanted this appliance suite, you guys. But because we knew this wasn’t our forever home and we’d end up just leaving the appliances when we sell, we opted for less expensive options. Luckily for you, these are all on sale now.

My Birthday Gift (to myself) + How I Save The Most Money On Clothes
I’m getting a little personal today. My birthday is this week and even though I’ve committed to spending less in 2019, I was able to buy myself an expensive gift for only $5! Today on the blog, I’m sharing my top money saving tips For nice clothes. This is how I have a pared-down wardrobe of expensive, quality clothing for pennies on the dollar!

First, let’s start with my birthday gift to myself because it took me a while to decide what I was going to buy and I’m super jazzed about it.

My birthday is January 12th. Each year, I receive a $15 store credit voucher from Banana Republic that allows me to take $15 off any purchase. There’s no exclusion and no minimum to buy. I’ll go more in-depth with this in a minute, but for now, you should know that I get this coupon because I have a Banana Republic Luxe Visa Credit Card and that I don’t have to spend thousands of dollars at their store to qualify for it. This year, I also happen to have a $10 Rewards Certificate for using my Luxe Card to pay for bills. This system is a little hard to explain but I’ll go into major details below.

With both of those credits/rewards, I had $25 I could spend at Banana Republic before January 31st (the month of my birthday). To get the most out of that money, I decided to do two things;

1. Make a list of items I always wish I have when I’m getting dressed. For instance, if I pick up a blazer from my closet and think to myself This would look so cute with a leopard print blouse, then I add Leopard Print Blouse to the list. It takes a few weeks to really get the list going but I keep a pencil and pad of paper in my closet to keep track of all my missing links. This is a method I’ve always meant to instill but it was’t until I was reading Shavonda Gardner’s post on The Holes In Our Home during which she mentioned Karen Brit Chick’s method for building a better wardrobe that it finally clicked and I put the plan into action. Once I had my list and my $25 certificates in-hand, I committed to myself that I would only buy something if it appeared on that list. This is my way of making sure whatever I purchase is going to actually be worn. I have a terrible habit of buying clothes that are trendy and cheap but then not ever wearing them. Note to self: a good deal is only a good deal if the product gets used.

2. Shop the clearance and sale sections to stack discounts. This is kind of a no-brainer for me. My grandmother used to collect everyone’s old newspapers and sit at her table for hours on Sundays clipping coupons that matched the sale items for that coming week. She was the original Extreme Couponer – out of necessity. She raised NINE KIDS, after her husband died suddenly, and supported them all on only his social security income for the remainder of her life. The lady had to figure out a way to make ends meet and for her, coupons + sales stacking kept food on the table. The Krazy Coupon Lady has built an empire teaching people how to do this. For a quick introduction to her method, read this. That method is mostly about groceries, but I apply the same mental formula to everything I buy – clothing, home decor, appliances – and through the years, it’s allowed me to have nicer things than any of my paychecks would ever have allowed. In fact, I get snide comments from family members about how I must be rich. Ha! Hardly. Trust me. It’s all in the methods.

I’ll dive deeper into those methods later in the post. For now, let’s stick to what I bought and what I almost bought for myself, after applying these methods.

WHAT I BOUGHT

On the list of items my wardrobe needs, I’d jotted down Turtlenecks – Anything But Black. I love the one turtleneck I own (this one in black). It’s super-slimming and the collar keeps the wind chill off my neck but doesn’t strangle me like the turtlenecks of my childhood did. Since it’s lightweight, I often pair it with a bulkier sweater for warmth. Since I’d also jotted down Beige Sweater, this seemed like the perfect item to tie right into my existing closet and check TWO of the items off my list. Plus, the price was good. Like, so good. Marked down from $60 to $30 for their Winter Sale, I was happy to spend just $5 on it. In fact, here’s a screenshot of my order total.

By combining the two Rewards Certificates and using my Luxe Card to pay the difference, I even qualified for free shipping. So my complete total for this $60 sweater was $5 + tax of $0.46! My sweater is set to arrive the day before my birthday, so I’ll be able to wear it for that weekend’s brunch celebration! (PS. My birthday is also the day Christine is taking over my Instagram for 24 hours, so make sure you’re following me here to see the sweater in action + to see the behind the scenes follies of my life).

WHAT I ALMOST BOUGHT

Each of these items would have checked one of the things off my list, but none of them checked off two. So in buying the sweater, I felt like I was getting a true two-for-one deal. Plus, I really just love the sweater. Now, since the gameplan was to pay as little as possible, I actually did end up spending more on the sweater than I would have on the belt or necklace (both are under $25), but I would have needed to add them together to get the full discount which would have made my total higher than the $5 I spent on the sweater. So even though I only got one item, I still spent less than I would have on two.

Also, it was really just personal preference. I feel like I’m going to get more wear out of the sweater than the accessories that I’m likely to only use once a month or so. Which brings me to my next topic:

How I save money and time on my wardrobe by following a few capsule wardrobe ideas without going fully minimalist.

STEP ONE: FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU DON’T WEAR

The biggest recommendation I have for people who want to save money on their clothes is this: STOP BUYING CLOTHES YOU DON’T WEAR. I’m totally guilty of this. I am the queen of the Target Clearance Section. I find a top for $3 and my heart fills with joy. It’s only THREE DOLLARS and it doesn’t matter that it’s a synthetic piece of neon orange garbage because it’s only three dollars! Yeah. That’s my mental justification for all those too-young-for-me, too-old-for-me, too-tight-for-me, too-bright-for-me purchases of yesteryear. But that was then and this is NOW. I refuse to keep adding pieces to my literal and mental square footage without taking a deep consideration about their use.

Think about it. If you have 15 sweaters and you want to wear a sweater, you’re going to have to sift through FIFTEEN PIECES before you get to the one you want to wear. You spend time thinking about them. You mentally agonize over your guilt that the tags are still on half of them. You take them off the hanger, put them on your body, realize you don’t like them, then toss them on the floor I favor of your old standby sweater that always gets you compliments and feels like clouds on your body.

Two days (weeks?) later, you pick all those rejects off the floor of your closet/bedroom and hang them back up to repeat the process again over and over and over until one day, you’re on TLC being reprimanded for your stack of empty tuna cans and moth-ridden Forever 21 kitten blouses.

Stop the cycle. Ditch the clothes you don’t wear. Right now. Go upstairs and spend 15 minutes grabbing everything you don’t ever wear and then take a picture of the pile with your phone before you take it to the donation bin.

Study that photo. What do all of your cast-offs have in common? Find the link. Whether it’s color, ill-fitting, scratchy material, or out-dated. There’s a link. Make note of that so you can ask yourself Does this X have these attributions? next time you’re browsing clothes to buy. If it does, don’t buy it.

STEP TWO: FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU DO WEAR

This is going to be easier than the first step, I promise. Everyone has a personal style. Even if you think you don’t, you do.

To figure out your personal style, here’s a quick test: You have five minutes to get dressed. You’re going to a brunch with girlfriends and someone’s bringing a new friend they want you to meet. You’ve heard a lot about her. She sounds really cool and you think you’re going to hit it off but you want to make a good first impression.

Set a timer for 5 minutes. Pick out your outfit. Accessories included.

Study it. Is it casual? What do the materials have in common? What are the colors like? Is each item bold or do you prefer a more neutral look with bolder accessories?

This is your go-to style.

For me, my go-to style has a formula that meets these standards;
natural materials like cotton/linen (or natural-looking, in the case of vegan leather)
neutral or muted color palettes with one accent color
timeless / classic silhouettes like Oxford shirts and blazers
layering with contrasting dark/light tones
mixing patterns with solids
longer, tummy-concealing tops
high-waisted pants that hit at or above the ankle
tailored blazers
flowy sweaters
small accessories with one stand-out piece (statement bag, earrings, necklace, etc)

I use this checklist, combined with my Closet Needs mentioned before, any time I’m considering new clothing additions. If it doesn’t meet these standards in every single way, I don’t buy it.

I also noticed I’ve inadvertently developed a colorway for my wardrobe. Once I made note of that, I actually printed my own colorboard, which I keep in my office, to help guide me as I’m making purchases.

I know this seems totally neurotic, but so does stressing over every single outfit and changing your clothes ten times before you leave the house. A little bit of planning + neurosis goes a long way in streamlining my wardrobe decisions.

Also, you’re probably going to notice that my clothing color board looks a lot like my home’s colorway and my business branding. That’s not an error.

I like what I like.

By fully committing to my own preferences, I’m saving myself the headache of needing to plan out every single step of the way. With these factors already in place, I can forge ahead with the four million other decisions I have to make on any given day.

STEP THREE: LEARN TO LAYER

By learning to layer your clothing, you open up a new realm of possibilities with each piece. For instance, a single blouse may only look good with that one skirt that doesn’t fit the way you’d prefer so you never wear either. But if you pair that blouse with a neutral sweater, you might find you enjoy the more casual look it gives with your old standby jeans!

Learning to layer your clothing also helps you achieve more with less. I only have one pair of jeans – this skinny dark wash pair that goes with everything. On Saturdays, I wear them with a tee shirt and tennis shoes to go grocery shopping. But I also dress them up with a pair of loafers and a blazer for work meetings. On date night, I don a pair of black heels, silk blouse, and statement earrings to make them look especially chic. The same blazer and tennis shoes can be repurposed with my tee shirt for a casual brunch look. See??? The possibilities are endless when you learn how to layer appropriately for each day.

That’s why I call this a “Capsule Wardrobe For People Who Like Variety”. I don’t have only five staple pieces. I enjoy mixing things up and playing around a bit. I’ve just found that I’m able to get more action from my clothes if I keep my base layers fairly simple and add interest through top layers and accessories. SAVE MONEY BY WEARING CLOTHES OVER AND OVER AGAIN

A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF MY ONLY PAIR OF JEANS
It’s not the prettiest collage you’ll ever see online but I wanted to show you the depth to which I apply capsule wardrobe techniques to save money on clothes while still providing plenty of variety to my everyday looks. Those bad boys get a lot of use. If I’m not wearing yoga pants or PJs, I’m probably in these jeans.

I’ve had them over two years – they were the first wardrobe item I bought after I finally gave up my maternity jeans three years ago. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I lost a lot of weight because of morning sickness and dietary adjustments. Even after she was born, I never gained it back and ended up not being able to fit back into my pre-pregnancy pants. So I just wore my maternity jeans until finally they were falling off me.

There’s a technique to keeping clothes lasting this long. First, I don’t launder my jeans every time I wear them. I wash them once a week at the most. I never wear them for manual labor – I have a pair of paint pants I reserve just for home projects and gardening.

I addition to not laundering as often, I also don’t launder my clothes the way everyone else does.

I have some pretty extreme skin allergies which makes it really hard for me to use a normal detergent. But don’t worry – I don’t have to order some $100 soap or make my own at home. I actually spend less money and use less resources using the laundry method outlined at the bottom of this post: How I Clean My Entire 3,000 Square Foot House With Only 4 Natural Ingredients You Can Get At The Grocery Store:

BUY NICE CLOTHES BUT NEVER PAY FULL PRICE.

So all of those techniques show you how to buy fewer items less frequently but now let’s talk about how I save money on the items I do buy.

How I Save Money on Nice Clothes

I don’t thrift or take surveys or use any special technique that you can’t do yourself. Here’s how I get my clothes for pennies on the dollar:

GET THE MOST FROM YOUR STORE-AFFILIATED CREDIT CARDS

I have a store-affiliated Visa credit card. Simply having the card can earn you rewards but I take special care to really maximize the rewards for which I’m eligible.

Since it’s a Visa, I can use this card to pay for almost anything, including my monthly bills.

So I do. I set up all my monthly bills to automatically charge to my BR Visa. That means I’m combining over $1,000 a month onto ONE CREDIT CARD. As those bills hit the card, I make a payment to pay them off, so there’s never any interest charge. BUT I STILL GET THE REWARDS BONUSES for the dollar amounts spent. Since I have such a high-dollar spending amount, this qualifies me for Luxe status which offers even greater benefits including free shipping on every order with no minimum. This is pertinent because you don’t want to pay $15 to ship something you’re only paying $5 for!

Using this method, I stack up rewards points very quickly, which means I can shop for free, or basically for free, at their store whenever I want.

Combining those rewards points with the method of stacking sales and coupons that I outlined above allows me to purchase the clothing I need at rock-bottom prices.

WAIT FOR SALES

Don’t use your rewards points as soon as you get them. To maximize your rewards dollars, you need to wait for the items you want to go on sale. The best sales are Additional 40% Off Clearance. These happen quarterly and usually only last a few days.

Sign up for the newsletters at the bottom of this page so that when they’re on, you’ll know first thing that morning. Trust me, you want to jump on those sales because everything sells out QUICKLY.

This is another reason you want to start using the “Closet Needs” List Method I talked about before. Because when that sale is finally on, you don’t want to waste time trying to determine a list of stuff you want to buy. You want to make sure you already have that list handy to avoid accidentally buying something you don’t end up wearing.

If you really need something, settle for a smaller discount but still stick to the sale stacking method.

The sweater I bought wasn’t on clearance + 40% off. It was 50% off the original price. That was good enough for me because I know that the odds of BR running a clearance sale during the first month of the quarter are very low and I had that free $15 Birthday Certificate to spend before the end of the month. Since it checked all my “Needs” boxes, I was happy to spend a little of my own dough on it.

YOU CAN APPLY THIS METHOD TO ALMOST ANY STORE

You don’t have to specifically shop at Banana Republic to use this method. If you don’t currently have a store credit card for a place you frequently shop, do your research. Find out what your favorite stores offer their cardholders. Do a little math to make sure you can maximize your benefits without paying interest.

This is the last piece of advice I’m going to give and I really want to emphasize it: DON’T CHARGE ANYTHING TO YOUR CREDIT CARD THAT YOU DON’T ALREADY HAVE THE MONEY TO BUY.

People get into serious debt by not following this advice. So I want to be clear – if you end up paying interest, you haven’t saved a dime. Only charge what you can pay off that month for this method to work.

That’s why I only charge my monthly bills. Those are already budgeted and I know I can afford them. Anything else (like an unexpected emergency expense) goes on another card that offers 0% interest until I can pay it off.

Christine owned this wine opener when we moved in together and I am in love. Opening a bottle of wine with a traditional corkscrew is a little challenging some days (thanks, Rheumatoid Arthritis!). This opener has saved the day. Literally five seconds and I’ve got the bottle open and ready to go! It may not be the prettiest tool, but it’s my absolute favorite gadget!

Speaking of wine openers, I bought this one for my mother-in-law’s house and she loves it. She doesn’t drink wine very often but she entertains a lot. This was the perfect budget opener for her. It’s easy to use and makes opening an occasional bottle a snap! Plus it’s pretty fancy high-tech, no?

Under $25, this set is amazing! I’ve owned them for five years and they still look brand new. I don’t even hand wash them. I put them in the dishwasher every night because I genuinely use at least one of these every single day. Even for cocktails or water, they’re absolute perfection. This is my go-to gift for new homeowners or established wine drinkers alike. Everyone loves them!

Same idea only for Champagne glasses, I prefer not to go stemless. Here’s why: Champagne needs to be extra cold. Your hand is warm. So when you hold the stem, you’re keeping your body heat from affecting the temperature and subsequently, taste of the the champagne. There. I’m a neurotic.

Speaking of Champagne, this is one of my favorite gifts I’ve ever received. Christine’s best friend gave me this bottle + jacket set for my birthday a few years ago. The jacket keeps my bottles cool and features a handle by which you can pour! No ice bucket necessary!

I love Champagne but I’m not a fan of Mimosas. If I’m going to have a champagne drink, I don’t want it diluted in juice. I do, however, love Champagne when mixed with elderflower flavor. My favorite is St. Germain Liqueur. Throw a splash in your Champagne for a real treat. At night, I like a good spritzer cocktail and these tonic waters mix so well with Champagne that I like to keep them in my fridge all the time. For a fun hostess gift, combine a bottle of sparkling wine, a set of four of these tonic waters, and a fresh lemon in a basket. Tie with a bow. Instant festivities!

Ever red wine needs to breathe. Even the best bottles require some aeration to get the tannins eh I don’t really know the science behind it but I will say – let it breathe and it tastes better. This decanter has saved so many boxes of wine from looking and tasting like garbage. I’m cheap, you guys. I’ve been known to empty a boxed wine (here’s my favorite) into this decanter and serve it to a crowd. No one is the wiser.

Sometimes we don’t want to open an entire bottle or box into a decanter. For those nights when it’s just me, I use this portable aerator that I can pour directly into a single glass. It’s an inexpensive gift that will change your wine lover’s drinking habits.

The same company that makes the portable aerator I love also makes this vacuum bottle sealer that I use pretty regularly. Again, it’s under $10 and saves my good bottles from going bad before I can finish them. Because even the lushiest wine drinker can’t down a bottle a night.

So I could always preserve my reds but I’ve thrown out so many bottles of good Champagne because they went flat. Then I found this simple mechanism this year and it’s really improved my bubbly habit. Great stocking stuffer!

Admittedly, this is a weird gift. But I’m a lush who loves red wine and is married to a neurotic launderer. This is in her stocking every year. The absolute best stain remover we’ve ever found. We go through about one of these a month.

While Christine is a neurotic clothing and upholstery stain remover, I’m a neurotic about my teeth. I drink a lot of red wine, tea, coffee.. all those things that will make your teeth look awful. To combat the stains, I use these twice a year. The kits aren’t cheap, so I always ask for them for Christmas. They make a good under $50 Christmas Exchange gift.

Good honey is a luxury for me. I have a cup of tea almost every night with an infusion of honey and even make “special coffee” with honey on the weekends. This is one of those simple pleasures that just makes me life feel abundant. These are my current favorite ways to enjoy honey. I give the bottles as gifts with a bow while I break open the spoon packs and give friends a single one with a bag of tea and a nice mug.

The honey combs make stunning displays on a cheese board or dessert tray and a little goes a long way! I cut off a couple of tiny sections and add a honey dipper for ease of serving.

I like my coffee like I like my women; strong and full of opinions. These are my current favorites. You’ll notice that two of these are local because HELLO NASHVILLE! we’ve got some awesome roasters here. I also recommend you search for local roasters in your own township. You may be surprised to find that the small gals and guys are doing it best. Regardless, these are all available online.

These gadgets are all under $20 and allow me to get my gourmet coffee fix right at home.

This is my current favorite loose leaf tea. I think it would be a great hostess gift when combined with this awesome kettle (that’s a newer version of the one I own) and these glass mugs that we use to serve warm beverages at all of our gatherings.

A few years ago, I realized I didn’t have a true ice bucket. To remedy, I went a little overboard and bought a handful of them. So now we have a collection. Most are vintage but this one is actually my favorite. It’s simple enough to fit any decor and is so easy to open and use (a legit problem for me is that I can’t always get the lid off half of mine).

So I actually don’t own this one. Our cocktail shaker is an inexpensive blue glass one that I got at the Target Dollar Spot years ago and it’s perfectly functional so I don’t feel the need to replace it. HOWEVER I WANT THIS ONE SO BAD. I always have loved it. So, you know, if you’re looking for a gift for your favorite lushy DIY Home Improvement Blogger…

Two of my closest friends have gone through big break-ups this year which have required them to completely start over in their home furnishings. It’s a weird place to be; mid-30s and realizing you don’t have a set of glasses.

They both have very different styles but I stumbled across these inexpensive drinking tumblers and realized they worked for both of them equally because they’re so simple and classy. Plus, they function as everyday water glasses but also work very well for upscale cocktail drink ware. I want a couple of sets for myself now.

These glasses were one of my very first adult purchases. They lived with me from the time I was 18 until I “lost” them in a divorce at 26. We had some good times and I really do miss them.

Books are my favorite gifts to give and receive. Most notably, I enjoy giving cocktail books because they have such beautiful photos and can be displayed in the kitchen or dining room, where books are often forgotten. These are the ones I’ve been passing out recently.

These things were all the rage a few years ago and then they kind of fizzled out. (ha!) Christine is a huge fan of soda and received one for Christmas one year. I actually ended up using it more than she did because I like sparkling water. These are the best syrups on the market too.

Christine comes by her soda obsession pretty honestly. My mother-in-law drinks a 12 pack a day of Diet Coke. Seriously. The first three years I was married to her daughter, I don’t remember ever seeing her eat. She just drank Diet Coke all day. Unhealthy habit, FYI. But I still tease her with a new Diet Coke ornament every year.

I bought these to give as gifts last year and I ended up keeping one for myself after I saw what great quality they were. I seriously love these throws! They come in an array of colors and patterns and are so warm!

About two weeks into Fall, I tend to develop a chill that won’t go away until Spring. These throws keep me warm and toasty through all of it. Soft and plush but not so heavy that you find yourself getting trapped under the weight of them, these are the perfect blanket for a lazy afternoon or Netflix binge.

I’m not typically the type of person who buys every new beauty product and gadget on the market. I usually roll my eyes when a product promises some miracle relief from aging or just plain looking like crap. But this one sold me. I know. I’m so gullible.

The thing is – I actually don’t care if I have wrinkles. I just wanted relief from a puffy face. Mostly, puffy eyes. I spend a lot of time staring at a screen and my eyes get so tired by the end of the day. So when I read the reviews on these jade rollers that said it helped reduce puffiness AND FELT AMAZING, I was all Sign me the eff up!

I’m glad I bought into the hype because I actually enjoy using this. I lather on coconut oil every morning to reduce dryness (here’s the kind I use and love because it smells great and is super cheap). Then I take my roller and spend five minutes rolling every nook and cranny on my face until I the oil has absorbed. It’s cool and refreshing on my skin and the bonus board that comes with it feels great on my feet (don’t know if you’re supposed to use it on your feet, but hey, it works).

This is a really nice stocking stuffer that seems like it costs more than it does.

On the subject of cheap skincare, this lotion is my one item I’d take to the deserted island. I’m allergic to everything, so I usually can’t use store-bought products without breaking out in hives, but this baby is naturally good to me. My skin is notoriously dry (especially my hands), so I keep a bottle of this in every room of my house plus my car. It keeps my hands from drying out and my back from itching. Two thumbs up. Five stars. Put it in every stocking.

I have a wicked case of Generalized Anxiety Disorder and while meds help, I can never really calm my brain. Christine was recently told she needed to start meditating or she’s going to end up having a heart attack from stress.

We’re a crazed duo. We need to relax.

I bought this for her (us?) for Christmas and I can’t wait to give it to her. Technically, I’ve already read it and it’s the perfect gift for someone who thinks meditating is a load of BS but who really needs to meditate so her heart doesn’t beat out of her chest. It’s funny and insightful. Not so woo-woo that you can’t take it seriously but also not such a joke that you ignore it entirely.

I give it 2 Valiums and call me in the morning.

Here’s another good stocking stuffer for you! I’ve always though sleep masks were for trust fund kids. But then I started getting headaches that are worsened by light.

Now I wear this basic sleep mask every time my head hits the pillow and I’ve found my headaches fade faster and I sleep more soundly than before.

It contours to my face but doesn’t put too much pressure on my eyes, which is a good thing when the migraines hit. It’s super no-frills, so even men would wear it, but it does come in other colors in case you want to spice things up.

When I finally do have a chance to sit down and relax, I like to grab whatever reading material is nearby and quickly dive into the pretty pictures and words before I’m interrupted again.

This book has been on my coffee table for a solid year and I still can’t get enough of it.

If someone on your list loves pretty homes and high-end design ideas, this is the book for them!

This may seem like a weird gift, but it’s one of my favorite items in my home. You can fill it with ice or warm water and it’s an instant relief from pain. I like to put some cool water in it and lounge while it decreases my eye puffiness but I find the warm water works best for my aches. Christine prefers ice water for her headaches. To each her own.

They’re all super cute though. We currently own the monkey pattern and it’s so fun that even our daughter will sit still while we ice her boo-boos.

Even though I’m allergic to everything and my entire life sucks, I still enjoy a good old fashioned spa night every once in a while. The peel-off masks are my favorite because they remind me of my teenage years and there’s something rewarding about the sensation of peeling it off. The clay masks are great for removing dead skin cells, which feels pretty rewarding when your face is all soft.

The travel-sized ones make really good stocking stuffers too.

If you don’t already own a pair of dearfoams, get with it. These are hands-down the best house shoes / slippers ever. They feature hard soles so you can run out to check the mail in them and the interiors are so cozy! My favorite part? The styles are classic and they last forever. I tend to switch mine out every year, but I still keep the old ones to pass on to guests. And they’re machine washable, so you don’t have to worry if they get a little dirty.

Candles will never get old for me but I’ll admit that I do rely more and more on these diffusers every single day. The mist makes me smile, lifts my mood, and makes me home smell fantastic! These are my favorite brand (after trying several from Amazon that didn’t work for very long). I keep one beside my bed, one in my daughter’s room, and one in my office. This Refreshing oil mix is my favorite everyday scent, too. It makes the house smell clean and clears my sinuses. I’m also about to buy another one for my meditation room. Hold on just a sec while I check out, since they’re on sale and I have Kohl’s Cash. ; )

Okay. I just restocked my oils and now I’m ready to tell you about the other items I rely on Kohl’s for every single year: Family Coordinated PJs. We buy these every Christmas for Chuck and my mother-in-law and I love that the nightgown we get for Chuck has a matching doll’s nightgown.

Corny? Yes.

But also precious.

So no matter how many cute diffusers you get, nothing will ever replace the mystique of a glowing candle. These three are my favorites. I know they’re cheap and not really fancy, but the smells are amazing! Nothing too overwhelming and the glass jars aren’t too unattractive on the counter.

Nothing is cozier than sweaters, right? These are my current favorite. The top 3 are all currently on clearance, so act fast!

Christine has the ribbed hoodie and I love it so much that I actually just purchased the llama sweater for my niece who prefers androgynous attire. I actually want one for myself. So classic and adorable!

I live in workout clothes. These running pants are my favorite because they have pockets and they’re comfy af!

I’m currently wearing these joggers. No, they’re not the ones with the sequins (those were discontinued, to my utter disdain). These are simple and so affordable. They’re also very soft on the skin, warm but not heavy, and the cuffed ankle keeps cold air off my legs. Plus, they have pockets which I think we can all agree is a must-have. I’m a fan.

I love tea and coffee and honey.. all those simple little pleasures that make life more relaxing but don’t really cost much.

Truth in marketing – I technically don’t own the tea kettle you see here. But it is the updated version of the one I do own, which has been discontinued, and it has all the same features.

Also, I have this honey pot in white but it appears to be out of stock everywhere, except in yellow. I think the yellow is precious, so I decided to include it.

Once every couple of years, I allow myself to wander into L’Occitane and purchase one item. It’s a real luxury for me and I’ve been doing it since I was in my 20s. Even now that I can technically afford to shop there more frequently, I still keep my distance because I want it to remain a luxury and not a commodity.

These are my two current favorite items I have from there. Since I only use them sparingly, these bottles last me an average of THREE YEARS!

The pillow spray has a lavender and chamomile scent and is so pure that it doesn’t cause my skin any irritation. The Supple Skin Oil is naturally almond scented and is pure heaven to apply. When I use it, I catch myself smelling it all day and it makes me so happy.

If there’s a person on your list who deserves a special treat, this is for them. It’s pure luxury in a bottle.

I also adore these French milled soaps (Linden is my favorite) and have been known to just keep them stored in an apothecary jar in the bathroom so I can lift the lid and smell them whenever I want. I know I’m a lunatic. You don’t have to tell me.

I buy at least three new pairs of cozy fuzzy socks for my sister every year. She’s a homebody and she loves them. These are her favorite because she says they stay nice and fluffy even after a million washes.

Since I didn’t have the traditional collegiate experience, I didn’t happen to have a pair of these lying around my closet. Wink. After a decade of back-and-forth, I finally bought myself a pair of these lined boots last year and HOLY WOW I’m so glad I did. Last Winter was harsh. I barely wanted to leave the house. But sometimes you have to get out in public. These boots let me carry the coziness with me wherever I go.

Here’s a gift you can make yourself and really impress your loved ones. I use this in the shower about once a week to keep dry skin at bay and I’ve given these as gifts for years. The scent of lavender mixes with the coconut for a really pleasant treat!

I make these in bulk which keeps costs low. I originally purchased these containers three years ago and haven’t had to restock since. In fact, I’m still using the original bag of lavender buds and epsom salt as well!

RECIPE:
1 cup epsom salt
1/2 cup lavender buds
2 cups coconut oil

Blend all together in a large bowl. Divide into small cups. SO EASY!

Since we’re always so busy and go go going, we tend to forget to take quiet moments to restore ourselves. I like to capture these gifting opportunities to remind my loved ones to slow down and take it easy. A gift that pampers is a great way to do that without shouting Sit down before you lose your mind! at them.

I know a lot of people do gift guides for women or men separately but this just doesn’t fit into my lifestyle, honestly. The biggest problem with associating gender with items is that it leaves a ton of space for those of us who don’t fit into gender norms. For instance, I asked for a tool belt for Christmas this year. I’m a woman and, unless it has sequins or comes in pink (in which case: HARD PASS), that’s probably not showing up on any gift lists for women.

So I’m breaking my Gift Guides down into interests. Today, I’m exploring some great gifts for the technically-inclined loved one in your life. These are all items I’ve either purchased or own and I highly recommend them!

I bought this portable record player for Christine a couple years ago as a birthday gift and she LOVES it. She still has a ton of her old vinyls from her teenage years (original Michael Jackson Thriller album? Yep. Madonna? Check.) and a ton of these are from artists who no longer produce music, so she couldn’t get them on CDs or digitally. So this was the perfect solution until we have more space for a dedicated music room. That’s right. Give the mouse a cracker, and she’ll ask for a whole room dedicated to 1980s goth and industrial music.

The portability is what I love most about this record player. When not in use, it closes and stores away, looking like an old brief case. It’s pretty chic and fits right into our decor. But then she can take it anywhere in the house and play her music. The speakers are surprisingly good. They even make her industrial punk bands sound less.. what’s the word? … terrifying??? She can play both 45s and LPs on this machine.

If you’re married to an old with a fetish for those giant black discs with teeny groves, this is a definite must-have. It comes in 3 color options and each is uniquely adorable and chic.

On the subject of music, here’s something I own and love! I actually bought one of these for a friend’s birthday a few years ago. It happened to be that we were staying at his house the night we gave it to him. That next morning, he came out of his bedroom and exclaimed, That’s the best shower I’ve ever had! He loved this speaker so much that I gained a case of FOMO and bought one for myself. I’m so glad I did.

Before that, I’d been considering a whole home built-in speaker system. But after purchasing this, I realized I didn’t need one. I just move it around the house with me. It’s got great sound (Hello, BOSE), is WATERPROOF (so I can literally put it on the shelf inside the shower and listen to podcasts), and connects wirelessly to my phone. I even take it outside with me while I’m gardening and have no concern about it getting dirty because I can wipe it down so easily. As long as my phone is within range (I’ve discovered it needs to be on the same floor but not necessarily in the same room), it connects beautifully. FIVE STARS!

Oh! And I’m just going to mention this briefly because I was actually surprised by it – the price is really good. I thought a BOSE speaker would set me back hundreds of dollars but this one comes in under $150!

These are fancy. I received them as a gift for Christmas last year from Christine’s best friend and I was astonished by the call clarity and noise reduction. I like to run, mow the lawn, work around the house, etc while listening to music and these make those tasks so much easier. I used to wear my wired headphones and get literally stuck on every knob and corner in the house. And if you’re a runner, you’re likely familiar with the ridiculous tangle of wires dance you end up doing right as a school bus full of mean teenagers or that one hot dad in your neighborhood passes.

They’re pricier than I would’ve spent on headphones for myself, but because they’re now an older generation, you can get them for half the price of the newer generation (around $100 vs $200). They also come in some pretty cute colors. I have silver, (pictured), but Christine would probably prefer black and I kind of dig the rose gold.

This is, hands down, my favorite purchase of all time. And, you guys, I had to buy stuff to create my offspring. So.. yeah. I use it every single day and I’ve literally NEVER WATCHED TV ON IT. Calling it Apple TV is such a misnomer because it truly does so much more than that.

Let’s get this out of the way upfront – it’s $149 and then you have to pay for TV shows you can watch on it. So if all you want is a TV streaming device, get yourself a $50 ROKU Stick (we have one of those too and love it) and save yourself the money. But if you listen to podcasts, audio books, and music, have an iPhone, and regularly browse the Zillow, Pinterest, or Instagram apps, or literally any website on your phone for fun, KEEP READING CUZ I’M BOUT TO BLOW YOUR MIND.

The Apple TV has a feature called “screen mirroring” which allows you to broadcast whatever is on your phone to your television. Think of everything you look at on that tiny screen. Now imagine it on your TV. You’re welcome.

Also, pair the Apple TV with Apple Music – we pay around $16 /month for a family plan which allows the two of us to have unlimited access – and your world just got instantly better.

If you ever watch my Wine Downs and hear me saying “Play Spa Radio” or whatever at the beginning, I’m talking to my Apple TV. Apple Music has free radio stations that are so good. Even for people like me, who haven’t listened to pop music since the 90s, they have music I love!

Here’s the best feature of Apple Music (and why I love the Apple TV so much) – you can listen to almost every single song ever recorded any time FOR FREE. If it’s in the Apple library, you get instant access and you can download it to your library and devices so that you have access to it even when there’s no wifi connection. Unlimited albums. Unlimited songs. Everything you want to hear. All for $16 a month.

Listen, if you have an Apple device (iPhone included), you want Apple Music. Even if you don’t buy the Apple TV just yet, at least spend $16 to try out Apple Music. Trust me.

I was a late adopter, am not even particularly technically inclined, and now I wish I’d known about it a decade ago. If you buy the $25 gift card (above) for a friend, you can get a free 3 month subscription to Apple Music. Don’t say I never gave you anything. This will change your life.

I feel so weird recommending expensive products to you guys because I am such a tightwad with my own money. So let’s throw in something super cheap that makes my technical life a bajillion times better.

I am a neurotic about my computer and phone screens. I’ve tried every product and tip and tutorial and this is the best on the market, I swear. Throw it in a stocking and watch as your loved one is slightly disappointed and then thanks you three weeks later.

As I was finalizing my list, Christine said, You’re not including Sirius???, in shock. I actually wasn’t going to. Not because I don’t love it but because it’s almost like an arm by this point. I forget that it’s not something people don’t just inherently have.

So if you don’t, it’s time to get with the program. The old radio stations suck. I’m sorry. They do. Even my old favorite here in Nashville – Lightening 100, is a mess now. I’d been completely dedicated to that station since 14 years old and then one day the musical director died, (RIP David Hall), and the next week the shows were garbage and the same 8 songs played over and over again until my ears bled.

But who can sit in a car without music? Especially on road trips. Of course, we play Apple Music and our old standby radio stations but there’s something about the 80s / 90s stations’ random mixes that makes me happy. Plus, Channel 33 – First Wave on Sirius – plays Saturday Night Safety Dance on Saturday nights (shocked!), which is this fantastic mix of 80s electronic music that’s uplifting and nostalgic. On Sunday nights, the same station plays Dark Wave, which is a mix of 80s goth and industrial music and Christine’s been known to just go sit in the driveway for an hour, listening in.

The package we have is normally $16/month but is currently on sale for $5 a month, which is a HECK OF A DEAL, so jump on it.

How much do you love this techie? Is it love or is it LOVE? Because this one is pricey.

But hear me out – this is the best purchase I made this year and it has completely transformed my life and everything about how I do business and literally my entire future and career.

I’m prone to buying the bargain items. I don’t buy the cheapest but I’ll buy the second cheapest. The refurbs. The slightly off-brand. The “has almost all the features I wanted and who needed a non-cracked screen anyway?” computers. This is the very first brand new computer I’ve ever owned. No joke. Every computer I’ve ever had has either been a refurbished model or was a hand-me-down. That’s how little I care about computers.

But when my refurb Dell went belly-up, just before I was slated to start taking a course I really needed for my business, I knew what I had to do. So I got out a credit card and I cringed so hard when I signed the receipt but I sucked it up and I bought it and the rest is history. Three months later, I launched a design service that turned my business from sinking ship to suddenly moderately profitable and this past Fall, I paid off the laptop.

The designs I create, and the ease with which I am able to create them, would not be possible without this machine. It’s a beast. I’m on my laptop at least 11 hours every single day and almost never have a slow down or freeze. I have 5,000+ high resolution photos on this machine and not an issue with storage. I take at least 50 screenshots a day, on average. Write 1200 word posts. Ask Siri to do math like 500 times. This baby gets it all done.

Looking for a gift under $20? This phone case is brilliant! Every single time I’m out in public, I get comments about how amazing it is. I agree. I can’t believe I’ve only had it for 3 months. It feels like I should’ve known this existed a long time ago.

I’m not prone to carrying giant purses or pocketbooks full of change. I like to have my debit card and my ID on me. That’s it. With this case, both tuck right into the back of my phone and I’m never without all three. I have the rose gold one because, I have a rose gold phone and I really wish I could just use it without a case, but alas.. whatever. Also, I drop this all the time and she’s fine. No breaks. The phone is fine. The case is fine. We’re all good.

Portable DVD players still exist. My kid has this one. It stays in the car, strapped to the back of the passenger headrest. Daniel Tiger is raising her and now road trips are 90% more enjoyable and unless you’re a parent of a three-year-old, you’re not allowed to comment nor pass judgment.

Why not an iPad or a streaming device? you ask. Two simple words: Red Box. There are a million in every city and your kids never run out of movie options. When she’s losing her mind because she wants to watch something else and you’re still six hours from the beach, RED BOX, homies.

I’ve told you that Christine works in television. She actually works on televisions. It’s kind of a long story and I don’t really think I’m supposed to get into it, but let’s just leave it at she has an Electronics Engineering degree and she knows a lot about TVs.

She will not buy a TV that isn’t Samsung. We have five TVs and they’re all Samsung. This is her favorite. We paid $1,000 more than its current sale price for it last year and I’m not even mad about it because I really do love this TV. The picture is beyond gorgeous. Hook your Apple TV to it and get lost in those aerial screensavers for hours. We do.

I want a Frame TV like, super bad. But I can’t justify the price. So I’ll just stick to my regular old TV that looks like a TV and deal with it.

For under $100, this Blu Ray player is solid and helpful. She’s our old standby, connecting us to apps like Netflix and Hulu and allowing us to play our daughter’s Blu Rays and DVDs on repeat.

Can’t go wrong with a basic and well-made machine!

I almost didn’t include these two in our list because they seem so uncool. But if you’ve got a person on your list who likes to automate your home, this is a good gift!

The first is a programmable light switch. It installs in the place of your regular light switch, requires no wifi or bluetooth connection (no additional apps on your phone hooray!), and can be programmed to turn the light on and off automatically every day. We have this installed on our front porch (exterior) lights and it’s so helpful! I love that it keeps our lights coming on even when we’re away, so the front of our home is never dark at night.

The second is my favorite. It’s a motion sensing light switch. You’ve probably seen these in public bathrooms. When you enter the room, the light comes on and it stays on for a set number of seconds after you leave. We have two of these installed in our home; one in the garage and one in the laundry/mudroom. Both of these rooms are most likely to be entered when our hands are full (groceries, laundry baskets, etc). So these switched automatically light our paths and then shut off to save electricity automatically. Brilliant! It’s the original Smart Home device!

The best part? Both of these genius products are under $35!

This is, hands down, the fastest printer I’ve ever owned. It’s fully wireless, so I can print from my laptop in the garage while it sits in my office. I can print from my phone, my iPad, Christine’s laptop – anything connected to our wifi. And the quality is amazing.

It may not seem like it, but I really do love a neutral room. There’s just something about white and taupe that really set the tone for relaxing. What’s really fun about having neutral spaces is that you can create interest by layering textures. When the temperatures drop and the outside is glistening with orange and red, I crave a khaki tweed or light grey chunky knit throw. These five pillows set the tone. Just layer a few around the room, light a candle, and curl up with a good book.

As much as I talk a big game about loving a neutral space, you know I can’t resist a neutral room with bold pops of bright accents. When I saw their newest line of covers, The Jellybean Collection, I felt like they’d modeled it after my very own whole home color palette. I’m breaking the next two sections down by style. For the most part, there are two groups of people, when it comes to design; Traditional and Modern. There are a ton of subgroups that these two categories can be subdivided into but generally, these are the two major design styles. I love them both equally (My subgroup style might be called “Transitional”). So please don’t feel like you’re pigeonholed into these specific styles. This is a very broad idea. Plus, no one can hold you into any group. You love what you love. I hope you love these.

Okay, so technically that was 21 pillow covers. I just couldn’t help myself. I can genuinely see each of their styles in my home or a client’s home.
