The front yard boasts a beautiful herb garden and a giant front porch for lounging. Off-street parking includes the driveway which can fit up to four vehicles (additional parking in the back, if needed).

The living room and dining room are connected but not entirely open-concept, providing some coziness.

The dining room features a modern table and chairs seating up to six. In the Living Room, you’ll find a large reclining sofa with chaise, perfect for lounging and watching the included streaming services on the Samsung Frame TV. Free streaming services include; Hulu, Netflix, Max (HBO), Disney+, Samsung TV Plus channels, and Peacock.

From a central hallway, you can access the front rooms (living and dining rooms), kitchen, first floor bathroom, downstairs bedroom, and a staircase that leads to additional living spaces.

The full kitchen includes a Kitchenaid refrigerator with built-in ice maker and internal water dispenser. For cooking, you’ll utilize a dual fuel range (gas cooktop with an electric oven). After meals, the Bosch dishwasher makes for quick clean-up of dishes. A Cuisinart coffee maker can be programmed to start automatically every morning. Or you can enjoy the freshest coffee with a French press. Stainless steel pots and pans, ceramic dishes, and glasses/mugs are included to make your stay easier.

To the left of the kitchen, you’ll have full access to the laundry room featuring an LG Steam Washer and Dryer. One of the two access doors to the backyard is through this room as well. This door includes a doggie door for your pooch’s access to their fully fenced backyard. It can also be sealed if you have cats and need to keep them inside for safety.

On the other end of the hallway, you’ll access the ground-floor bedroom. This bedroom features a Queen bed with a pillowtop mattress, cotton and linen bedding, a Blue air purifier, Roku Smart TV with streaming apps and Roku Channels. This room also features a desk for working and an additional patio door for access to the back yard.

Directly beside the kitchen and adjacent to the bedroom is the staircase which leads to two additional bedrooms, one bathroom, a bonus living space, and an additional dedicated workspace with a wireless printer to which you’ll have access.

Upstairs, you’ll find an office nook with ample desk space as well as a reading nook with access to a record player to take advantage of the phenomenal acoustics provided by the high ceilings.

The central hallway leads to two additional bedrooms.

The first bedroom to your left features a Full sized bed with a Twin-sized trundle for additional children’s sleeping arrangements.

This room also features a cozy reading nook for a small child, a Roku Smart TV with streaming apps and Roku Channels access.

Down the hall, you’ll find the Principal Suite featuring a King-sized Sleep Number bed which can be adjusted to your desired softness or firmness and a full bathroom.

The principal bedroom also features views of downtown, a Samsung Smart TV with streaming apps and Samsung TV Plus channels and two dressers (plus walk-in closet) for clothing storage.

A very large Principal bathroom is also in this suite. It includes a tub for soaking, vanity with two sinks, and shower with rainfall showerhead and a handheld shower wand.

I hate installing curtain rods. There I said it. In fact, I detest the task of hanging curtains so much that I often choose to forego having them at all in my own home. Recently, I opted to use just roller blinds in my own bedroom and I’m so happy with the modern look of naked windows:

But clients want curtains. They make a room feel polished. If windows are the eyes of a space, the curtains are the mascara. Installing window treatments makes the windows pop and instills a luxurious mood in the space.

Over the years, I’ve seen many tricks to install even curtains. Those tricks often include a myriad of tools; laser levels, traditional levels, measuring tapes, etc. They can be complicated and those hacks often allow for human error. Even just a millimeter miscalculation can result in wonky and uneven curtains.

So today I’m going to show you the one fail-proof way to install curtain rods in your own home and get even curtains every time. And all you need is a piece of trash.

MY NO-FAIL LEVEL CURTAIN HANGING GUIDE

STEP ONE: using a flat piece of cardboard, cut a 45 degree notch out of one corner.

This will allow you to place your guide directly above and beside the window trim. This method works best if your windows have moulding installed around them. The trim will allow your cardboard to rest in place on the edge of the moulding.

If your windows do not have trim, you can still use this method by holding the cardboard in place on exactly the 45 degree edge while making your template markings (step 2 and 3).

If your windows aren’t square, you can still use this method by incorporating a level to make your own 45 degree angle, using the highest and widest points of the window and marking it on the wall.

STEP TWO: place your cardboard with the 45 degree notch situated around the window trim (as pictured). On your cardboard, mark where you want your rod to land, in relation to the window and ceiling.

The cardboard should rest on the edge but if it moves, use a strip of delicate painter’s tape to secure it in place while you make your pilot holes (next step).

If your windows do not have trim, you can still use this method by holding the cardboard in place on exactly the 45 degree edge while making your template markings (step 3).

If your windows aren’t square, you can still use this method by incorporating a level to make your own 45 degree angle, using the highest and widest points of the window and marking it on the wall.

STEP THREE: bring your cardboard back to ground level and place it on a horizontal surface with the rod’s screw holes resting where you made your previous mark. Using a pen, mark the holes where your screws are to be installed on the cardboard.

If your rod comes with separate hanging hardware (most curtain rods have a hook style bracket that allows the rod to rest inside it), follow this method, using only the hardware hook portion of the rod to make your guide.

STEP FOUR: place the cardboard back on the wall using the same corner method as before. Use the screw hole markings you just made to drill your pilot holes. Drill through the cardboard and into the wall.

This will BE your template that you’re going to use on the opposite side of the window and on each subsequent window so use care and make sure you go into through the cardboard and into the wall.

STEP FIVE: place the cardboard to the side (do not toss it!) and install your wall anchors.

For drywall, you can use the anchors included with your curtain rod. Use a hammer to gently tap them securely into place, as shown.

If your curtains are heavy (like velvet), I recommend using these self-drilling drywall anchors as they grip much better.

If you have plaster walls, I prefer these molly bolts.

At this stage, your window will look like this:

You will have installed anchors into the right side of the window but do not place your bracket just yet.

STEP SIX: flip your cardboard over so it’s a mirror image and place it on the window trim on the left side exactly as before. You should have drilled through the cardboard so that your holes will line up exactly evenly – and angled identically – on the opposite side of the window.

Follow steps four and five from above.

Your window should now look like this:

Note that on the top left side, there is no anchor installed. That’s because I ran into a stud while drilling my pilot hole. If this happens, you will not need an anchor as your screw will be secured directly into wood.

If you have lathe and plaster walls, you may find the lathe tricks you into believing you’ve found a stud. Drill past the lathe to make sure your anchors will be secure.

If you aren’t sure which material your walls are made of, a good way to determine is by knowing the age of the house. If your house was built before the 1950s and has never undergone a total gut renovation, you most likely have plaster walls.

Now you can install your curtain hardware and your curtains!

If you are installing multiple windows in your home, I recommend saving your cardboard template to use on every window. This promotes continuity throughout the home when all your window coverings are installed at the same height and width.

HOW HIGH TO HANG CURTAINS

a brief explanation of curtain lengths

To make a room feel taller, hang your curtain rods 4-6 inches above window frames. Extending the rod 3-6 inches beyond both sides of the frame makes a window feel grand and allows more light to shine through when drapes are open.

If you have a tray ceiling, like the one shown in my client’s home above, you’ll want to leave 2-3 inches of height between the rod and the ceiling to keep the curtains operable.

The length of your drapes can have great impact on the look of a window too. For a clean, casual look, hang drapes so that they fall just a 1/2 inch above the floor – especially if you open and close your drapes frequently.

For a luxurious puddle effect, like the one I created in the image above, add 6-8 inches to the rod-to-floor measurement of the drape.

LAYERING CURTAINS

For additional warmth and dimension in a room, consider installing layered curtains in contrasting fabrics and colors on the same window.

You can do this by installing a sheer panel on the interior of the rod and a thicker panel on the outside, as I did in the image above. Or you can use a double panel hanging rod to allow the curtains to move freely and independently of one another.

CURTAIN HARDWARE MATERIALS

Depending on the style you want for your home, you may choose to use curtain rings to secure your curtain panels to the rod. This gives a sophisticated and more traditional look to the space, as seen in my traditional dining room design pictured above.

Metal curtain rods and hardware will have a more modern feel while wood rods convey a traditional aesthetic.

If you’re on the fence, know that wood rods can be custom cut to any length and many final options are available to create the look you want. These rods come at a higher cost than adjustable metal rods. Since curtains can be expensive, consider your entire room budget as you make your decisions on materials.

Remember that you don’t need curtains to create softness in a space. I often use custom roman blinds to incorporate textiles in many of my projects, as shown above, without the visual clutter of a room filled with fabrics.

We’ve come a long way, baby! Here’s where we started in the bathroom:

Now here’s the finished space:

We painted the walls black, installed a better pattern on the floor, and added accents with Danish vibes to truly allow the artwork to sing.

The showstopper is the wallpaper I installed on the front of the Ikea vanity.

The other accents in the space were kept minimal in color palette but I still wanted to add visual interest by combining different patterns and geometrics. I used another Marimekko pattern on the shower curtain:

As I ordinarily do, I added a strip of fabric to the bottom of a standard shower curtain to bring the height to 84”. Unlike my ordinary style, I used a patterned curtain with a solid stripe this time. Look at me! Going wild!

With the black and white striped rug, the circular pattern feels just unique enough to make a statement but not overwhelm the space with additional colors.

I added hardware to our freestanding IKEA cabinet and then carried the wood from that cabinet onto the mirror beside the shower by adding strips of wood veneer.

This mirror serves as our daily dressing mirror and the hooks beside it allow us to hang our lounging robes. Of course we have family robes in grey scale. Of course we do. Here’s how everything flows with our art choices in the bedroom:

The bedroom feels so much more peaceful now without all the chaos of clutter. And, because I know you want to know where I got this bed, I DIYed it. Well, I reupholstered our existing storage bed in two Marimekko prints!

Initially, I’d planned to only reupholster the headboard in the Marimekko Unikko pattern but I felt like this room needed something else to balance the florals.

Marimekko Ajo (stripes) to the rescue! This fabric added an additional layer of geometry to the bed in a fun and unexpected way.

I also love how it pulls the stripe from the bench and the duvet without overpowering the room in stripes.

Looking direct at the bed, you hardly notice it. But then, from the side, it’s additional fun!

Here are the accents we added that we are happy to let shine:

This bedroom and bathroom suite is a real homage to our family. It’s inspired by my wife’s favorite artists from the 1980s/90s and by the spirit of breaking rules.

Over the past year, both of us have aged more than we expected. 2020 was a hard one for us and this space is a reclamation of our sense of youth and playfulness.

This room is a celebration of coming out of the dark. It’s another testament to black and how darkness doesn’t have to feel heavy or burdensome.

Last week, I showed you how I wallpapered the drawer fronts on the vanity and I’m honestly still not over it. I stare at it a lot. I love it so much.

Modern Bathroom Accessories

Fortunately, I was able to stop staring at my beautiful vanity long enough to tie up some loose ends this week:

Like this little shelf between the mirrors. It’s holding our family’s daily grab-n-go paper products like cotton swabs.

I also added these fun cups for storing our individual toothbrush and toothpastes:

These porcelain cups feature a typeset designed by Arne Jacobson in the 1930s. This font is a staple in Modern Scandinavian decor and fits right in with the other Danish elements we’ve incorporated. For an extra layer of black and white, I also used his font on the wall hooks where we store our towels:

Since two of our family members share the same first letter of their names, I didn’t feel obligated to designated one hook or cup for each of us. Instead, I was able to play with the alphabet a little. Alphabet decor is a trick you see incorporated most often in children’s spaces but I like the playfulness it brings to this otherwise-grownup space.

While I’m still awaiting the shipment that has our shower curtain, bath towels, and fabrics for the bedroom upholstery, I was able to find some new hand towels that complement the modern aesthetic and speak to the colors in the vanity without overwhelming the space.

I also used my free time this week to finish the vinyl tile installation and add the new rug you see above.

The addition of the black in the tile brings the room together. There may not be a ton of color in this room, but the visual interest isn’t subtle. The repetition of black and white in varying patterns adds a layered element without overwhelming the space with color.

Why neutral? When we rebuilt this house, I made a conscious decision to use only black and white wall and trim colors in order to bring the feeling of a modern art gallery. We have a large collection of art and it grows every time we travel. Unfortunately, we’ve never had a home where we could display most of our modern artworks because the styles of our previous homes didn’t match the art we love most.

All that changes now.

MODERN ARTWORK

The entire concept for these two rooms was born out of our artwork. The first piece, below, was given to our daughter as a gift when she was born by one of our closest friends and her play aunts:

It was damaged in the tornado, but I was able to salvage it. This original graffiti-style piece was created by Nashville-based artist, Mayeli Art and served as the inspiration for bringing in street style to this room.

While I was traveling, I found a beautiful print by New Orleans-based artist Veronica Casares Lee that had the colors and overall tone we were looking to incorporate in the bathroom.

Her print, above, complements the existing art pieces (wood block and Jonathan Adler Acrylic Pill Statue) I’d already intended to use in the space.

The artwork shone above is from our collection. We’ve had both these pieces for a number of years and, once cleaned up from the tornado debris and storage, they’ll be installed behind the bed to offset the window. When complete, the installation will look like a trio of artwork with our original historic window as the centerpiece.

OTHER BEDROOM / BATHROOM UPDATES THIS WEEK

After months of debate over which handle style to install on the freestanding storage cabinet, we finally handed on simple edge pull handles so we can more easily access the items we need.

To add another wood element, and offset the starkness of the black and white, I applied a simple veneer edge banding to the existing white Ikea mirror. This moment, by the shower, will call to the wood on the mirror vignette and the freestanding cabinet.

WHAT’S LEFT TO BE DONE?

It wouldn’t be an ORC if I weren’t stressed ‘til the last minute, right? There’s a lot that still needs to happen and a lot of materials we’re still waiting to receive. Here’s my list;

I WALLPAPERED THE VANITY

AND I FREAKING LOVE IT SO MUCH!!!!

When we first designed this new bathroom, we decided to install a Hemnes vanity from Ikea. It has a ton of storage. Like, seriously, a TON of storage:

This is the side of the vanity that I share with our six year-old daughter. So it’s pretty packed. Because remember: although this is technically the principal suite bathroom, it’s going to function as our main family bathroom for a while. (more on that here)

So we need storage. Lots and lots of storage:

And the Ikea Hemnes vanity offers a lot more storage space than the average vanity. It’s also highly affordable.

Unfortunately, it’s also pretty boring. Especially in white. And I don’t want this bathroom to be boring. I want this bathroom to be fun!

Enter wallpaper, stage right:

I love wallpaper. I use it all the time. I used it here, here, here, here, and here. In the past, I’ve detailed a lot of ways to use wallpaper on an actual wall. Which is obvious.

But I’ve also talked a lot about using wallpaper on furniture (like this Serena & Lily-inspired console table, this easy vase DIY with wallpaper samples, and this grasscloth artwork mat). So I’m not going to detail all the steps of how I used wallpaper to give this vanity a makeover because that’s covered in the console table post. But I will tell you that I chose to install the wallpaper only on the flat portion of the drawer front.

In that closeup shot, you can see that these drawers have a slight bevel on the edges. I opted to keep the beveled portion of the drawer white and use that as my guide for my paper cuts.

So you can see there’s still plenty of white surface on the front of this furniture piece. That allows for the best adhesion and it keeps the furniture looking like furniture and less like an extension of the wall.

As for the actual wallpaper I used, I opted to stick with a traditional paper that requires a separate paste application. The exact paper I used is available here. It’s technically a wall mural and you can add your own custom dimensions. It even came with a powdered glue mixture but I opted to use my favorite paste because I already had some in the basement and I trust it.

Additionally, I replaced the light fixtures in the room and they’re good. Really good.

But nothing beats what I did on the wall above the vanity. It’s the creme de la creme of the space. It’s the piece that turns the boring mirrors into artwork. I created a custom vanity mirror vignette to make two $20 Ikea mirrors look custom and high-end using a thin piece of plywood and even with these ridiculous lumber prices, it’s the best $30 I’ve spent in this room!

All of the sources will be linked at the end of the post and this is clearly just an in-process shot but DOESN’T IT LOOK FABULOUS?!

I used simple silhouette cage pendants over the vanity and gave them an upgrade with an oversized G40 porcelain lightbulb.

If the bulb is going to show, it needs to be a stunner. And this lightbulb is a stunner. As are the lightbulbs I installed in the linear sputnik chandelier in the center of the room (these bulbs are G25):

You can also see that I’ve begun installing new vinyl tile over the existing tile. This was always the tile I wanted in this bathroom but it was on backorder last summer when I needed to install flooring. Now that it’s back in stock, it’s giving us a callback to the downstairs bathroom tile which is also black and white hexagon:

These two bathrooms are cousins. Not twins. But they work well together in their respective spaces in the house. The downstairs is more traditional while the upstairs addition is clearly all new and more modern.

This week, I’m finishing up the vinyl tile installation, adding the final piece to the plywood mirror vignette, customizing our shower curtain, framing and hanging artwork, and adding the final decorative touches to this bathroom and bedroom.

When I left you last week, I showed you how we added a couple small dressers inside the closet to create additional folded clothes storage. That’s my first tip for small bedrooms with limited floorspace for storage:

SMALL BEDROOM STORAGE TIP 1: Add a small dresser in the closet

When your bedroom can’t accommodate additional furniture, check to see if your closet floor is wide and deep enough to house a small dresser for folded clothing. Most closets – even reach-in closets – have enough width and depth to accommodate for a small dresser that can provide optimal storage for cotton clothes.

Since most of our clothes are more casual (jeans, tee shirts, leggings), I would prefer to fold them into drawers instead of hanging them. That frees up space on the closet rod so only our nicest clothing items (blazers, dresses, trousers) can hang more loosely. The more space you free on your closet rod, the less likely you’ll have to iron your blouses and trousers every time you wear them.

In the other side of our odd little closet, I added an additional small dresser to accommodate casual shoe storage:

We have a lot of shoes but not all of them are nice or big enough to warrant being placed on display on the shelves. This little dresser gives me just the right amount of space to store clogs, sandals, and our extensive Chuck Taylor collection within the drawers. (yes, I said “our” because we are lucky enough to wear the same shoe size which means what’s her’s is mine)

Here’s a peek inside the small shoe dresser:

These are my everyday, workhorse shoes. They’re not the ones I would probably wear to take cute photos. But they are my favorites. While I don’t necessarily want to display them, I do need a place to store them. This suits the purpose just fine.

I added a sachet of dried lavender to the drawers to keep them smelling fresh.

While the specific dresser you use will depend on the amount of space you have, here are three that have a low profile to allow for tucking in under hanging clothes (click images to shop directly through the retailer using my affiliate links):

SMALL BEDROOM STORAGE TIP 2: Use space-saving clothes hangers

I also use velvet hangers instead of wood or plastic to hang my clothing. These hangers grip delicate fabrics more easily so they don’t continuously slide off when I’m rummaging for my favorite top. Velvet hangers also provide the added bonus of taking up less space, width-wise, so you can more easily fit more clothing on the rod.

There are a lot of different space-saving clothes hanger styles and colors to choose from but here are my favorites (click images to shop directly through the retailer using my affiliate links):

SMALL BEDROOM STORAGE TIP 3: Make your bed perform double duties

Every bedroom requires a bed. It’s a giant piece of furniture that you must own in order to sleep at night. So if you have to have it, why not make it work harder?!

Literally, use the empty space under your bed for storage! I’ve been employing this trick my entire life in some capacity. The space under your bed is the perfect spot for spare linens or seasonal clothing that you don’t need to access frequently.

Originally, as a young adult, I used under-bed storage bins on wheels to house all of my winter clothes in the summer and summer clothes in the winter. There are tons of options for gliding storage bins. Some are plastic and heavier duty. Some are fabric and help protect clothes from moths. Here are my favorite inexpensive under bed storage items you can buy right off the shelf (click images to shop directly through the retailer using my affiliate links):

Bins are an excellent option for under the bed storage but this year, we got an upgrade to the hack. WE BOUGHT A BED WITH BUILT-IN STORAGE DRAWERS!! Can you tell I’m excited?!

When I originally began researching beds with built-in storage, I kept finding beds for kids. Which is fine if you’re a kid. We are full adult women with Perimenopause on the horizon and I already have to sleep with a fan and throw a leg out the comforter to stay cool at night. If my wife literally even breathes near me while I’m trying to sleep, I would rather sleep on the floor.

All of that is to say: I need a king sized bed. I cannot fathom sleeping in a queen or full at this stage in my life. But, you know, you do you.

It took a long time to find a good storage bed that wasn’t made in a smaller size but I finally did it and then I found a bunch of them! Here’s the one we have (note that it sells out really quickly from every retailer and this is the only place I could find it at the moment):

We bought the bed in the linen color because that’s what was in stock at the time but we’re planning an update to the headboard which you’ve likely already snuck a little peek at in the first photo of this post.

Here’s the storage under our bed. Yes, I have a child’s winter hat. You can decide if it’s mine or my kid’s:

I like upholstered beds for adult bedrooms but I’m actually looking at other options for the guest room and I chose a painted wood trundle bed that can be converted to a storage bed for our daughter’s bedroom.

SMALL BEDROOM STORAGE TIP 4: Use vertical storage options

Since our bed is wide but our bedroom is not, we had to get creative with our bedside tables. We don’t have the space for big, bulky tables and even if we did, they would obstruct the access to the under-bed storage. So that wouldn’t be functional. How do I know? Experience:

But we do have about 20” on each side of the bed where we could have small tables. One option would be to use small, lightweight tables with no storage capacity. But I require a little bit of privacy in my bedside tables. Between the pill bottles, chapstick, water bottle, a little tray for my daily jewelry and hair ties, remotes for the fan, TV, and mattress (yes, we have a fancy Sleep Number mattress), my bedside table surface would get pretty cluttered without some capacity for concealed storage.

To the rescue? Floating bedside tables!

That’s an image from before they were installed. Notice something?

A STORAGE DRAWER!!!!!

Okay, so this floating bedside table has a drawer and it attaches directly to the wall via a French cleat hanger on the back and the company that makes them, Article, includes all the hardware and the anchors you need to install them.

Also in the package was a template for you to use in order to get your anchors in exactly the right spots.

I searched for so long to find a quality floating bedside table and these are real wood with a beautiful veneer (not a sticker). They’re stained black – not painted – so you get the texture of the wood shining through. I love them so much!

Here’s how they look installed on the wall:

They’re very simple pieces of furniture which is exactly what I wanted. You can also see how they blend right into the wall. In order to make this bedroom feel bigger, I’ve chosen many black pieces of furniture to allow the eye to continue around the room with fewer visual obstructions.

As you can see, I’ve also installed two sconces on either side of the bed and I’ll be detailing more about how I am going to hide all these cords in a couple weeks when we discuss lighting and decor.

For now, here’s how the bed area looks with the new bedside tables:

Because this bedroom is narrow, rather than wide, a simple bench is the perfect addition to the foot of the bed. And because I believe every room deserves at least one iconic splurge, I opted to finally buy my dream bench: A George Nelson Slatted Wood Bench.

This bench is a real splurge at around $1500 but there are a ton of less expensive options available in a few different color options. Here are the best knock-offs I’ve seen (click images to shop directly through the retailer using my affiliate links):

SMALL BEDROOM STORAGE TIP 5: Shop kid’s furniture

I know I just railed on how I don’t want a kid’s bed BUT hear me out. On the wall opposite our bed, we have a small amount of space to place a dresser. The depth is perfect for a standard dresser but the width between the bathroom door and the inswing of the bedroom entry door is tight.

One option would be to go vertical again by purchasing a tallboy dresser. Highboy dressers are generally taller and more narrow than a standard dresser. They usually feature four to six drawers that are stacked vertically, rather than appearing in columns.

There are some really pretty highboy dresser options out there but, unfortunately, that wouldn’t have worked for us. We like a TV in the bedroom and with a highboy, the height above the dresser would have been too high to hang a television for comfortable viewing.

Luckily, kid’s furniture is often made smaller than standard adult furniture. Usually, that presents an annoyance for me in my design work but in this instance, it worked out great!

I love this small dresser because it’s a very dark grey which lends itself to blending into the black wall background but it also has a really fun modern wood leg detail that will draw from the additional wood elements we will be adding in the room before the end of the project.

Eventually, the TV will be mounted just above the dresser on the wall. This will clear up space for a bit of the decor on the dresser. I also love those cubby shelves. This will allow me to store books and decorative objects within the dresser to create a more polished look. For now, while I await bins for the closet, they’re mostly housing miscellaneous items I need to put away.

The depth of the dresser allows for space to walk through the bedroom to the bathroom. That’s important because remember our bathroom is the only one upstairs and functions as a family bathroom.

Last week, we left one another with a design plan for the bedroom and bathroom. It’s tweaked a little since then so here’s the updated concept board + purchase list:

The bathroom has gotten a seriously bold update to the design over the past week. Once we got the black and white accents in, we realized the space was feeling a little stiff. So we’ve added more color and natural wood to the design.

And since I’m going so bold in the rooms, I decided to tone down the closet design. But first, here’s the closet when we started:

Originally, this space was supposed to be a very small guest room closet. That’s the really skinny part you see (second photo). It was originally designed as a reach-in and the door access was going to be father towards the exterior wall.

The wider part (first photo) was meant to be a hall closet with shelving for spare linens and outlet access for rechargeable vacuums and small appliances. The door would have originally been perpendicular to our bedroom door (in the hallway).

Once we realized we were going to be occupying this bedroom (our bedroom was originally downstairs), it became clear that we would need more than just a sliver of closet space for both our clothing and shoe needs.

Since we love our shoes and have a hard time finding room to store them, we decided the best plan for this narrow spot in the closet, which we need for the door to be able to open (more on that later, would be to add shelving to the back wall to accommodate the majority of our kick.

I used the same method to build these shelves that you see here to create built-in wall shelving for our shoes and accessories.

Since we don’t have a ton of hanging clothes and both of us are relatively short, I opted to lower the closet rod and add more shelving above for more storage capacity.

The small dressers will allow for additional folded clothing storage and easier casual shoe (think sandals) storage.

Here’s the finished product:

Here’s how the shoes are stored inside the little dresser:

I’ve added an additional dresser to the bedroom where I house all my folded clothing.

And a secret storage hack that I’ll give more details on next week when we talk about furniture (hint: it’s the bed)

Finally, we added a door to the closet! We’ve lived in this house for nine months without a closet door. It was time.

There was no clearance for the inswing of a door in this floorplan so we needed to be creative. I know a lot of people like the look of a hanging glide rail track but I really don’t. I think they feel a little more industrial than I typically like.

But I did actually find one in a white finish that I could live with and opted to hang it inside the closet so it didn’t become a focal point of the room.

We reused one of the original doors to the house. It’s so perfectly imperfect. We even kept the original backplate for the door knob which has been painted over and over again. We’re using this as a finger glide since a traditional door knob would be too deep to fit behind the wall:

It’s so nice being able to close the door and not having to stare at clothes in my bedroom. I’m loving this upgrade.

Next week, I’m going to show you the other storage upgrades this room is getting. We’re talking furniture that serves double purposes. Because when you have a small house, every item must carry its own weight in functionality.

To recap from last week, we’re currently sitting with a pretty bare room. The walls of the bedroom and bathroom are painted Black Magic by Sherwin Williams. The trim is Pure White by Sherwin Williams. We’ve purchased a new bed, bedding, and a rug. And that’s basically it:

That’s the view of the bedroom from the day we moved into the house last August. Since then, nothing has changed. We’re using temporary bedside tables while we await our new design. At this point, everything hinges on coming up with a concrete design plan for this room.

The decisions we make at this point will determine the overall feel of this room. So let’s talk about how I consider and then settle on a design plan.

Since I want the changes we make in our Principal Bedroom Suite to be long-lasting and worthwhile, I’m tackling this space as if I were designing for a client. I’m following the same general process I have for working with clients (except I’m also doing a lot of the installation myself, rather than hiring it out).

When I work with clients, the very first thing I do is create three concept boards for every room. While the general style typically remains the same, based on what the client has previously shown interest in, each board has a distinct overall vibe.

MODERN BLACK BEDROOM + BATHROOM DESIGNS

Modern Luxury Bedroom

My initial design concept for the bedroom section in our Principal Suite merged a lot of the characteristics of natural luxury and transitional style that we’ve incorporated in our previous bedrooms. I stuck with lighter neutral colors and luxurious fabrics like linens and velvet and added a darker focus with black accents and plaid wallpaper.

Modern Glam Bathroom

To accompany this luxurious bedroom design, I created a concept for our en suite bathroom that added glamorous touches to up the wow factor.

While we absolutely loved this original design concept, we did notice that it doesn’t quite fit with the general overall style of the house at this point.

As we get older, our personal style has begun to feel a lot less … mature. We’re looking to have more fun in our home at this point. As a professional designer, I create beautiful and luxurious spaces for clients all day long and now I’m craving something less perfect for my own space.

Modern Geometric Bedroom

Once I realized I wanted to add a little more Scandinavian style to the space in order to make it work with the remainder of the house, I began adding geometrics for the second concept. I love playing with stripes juxtaposed with natural elements, like wood, to create a balance of organic and industrial.

Modern Industrial Bathroom

By adding more industrial elements in the bathroom, I was able to wink at the history of our home without losing the overall modern feeling I want this addition to have.

This second design concept felt like it was getting closer to evoking the playful feeling we want our room to have but we weren’t quite there yet.

So I decided to go full-tilt fun:

Modern + Playful Bedroom

My personal style veers into the Scandinavian Modern spectrum. I’ve often been hesitant to use that term when I describe my vision for my home because I think it’s too frequently aligned with neutral and white spaces. Clearly, we’re not looking to have a neutral or white space.

If you remember my daughter’s bedroom design concept, you probably recognize the floral pattern already. Even if you don’t remember her bedroom, you likely recognize those bold poppies from just existing in the world. That pattern is Marimekko’s Unikko design and it dates back to 1964 and I absolutely love the story behind it.

Armi Ratia, the founder of the Finnish design and print house Marimekko, declared that she would never release a floral pattern at Marimekko. In protest, Designer Maija Isola submitted a series of bold florals for consideration to Armi. The designs were so beautiful and so perfectly Finnish-Modern that Armi ate her words and released the pattern, called, Unikko (Poppy in English) the next season.

Modern Playful Family Bathroom

Remember when I said we aren’t frilly? As the story above exemplifies, rules are made to be broken. This Unikko fabric inspired me to add more playfulness to our currently-shared family bathroom too. It might just show up in every space I design in our house moving forward.

I wonder how much fun the other designers are having in their homes this season. Now is the perfect time to go check them out and see if anyone else is using any iconic designs in their concepts.
