August was an awesome month for DIY bloggers to show off their best 2×4 DIY builds! Today, I’m highlighting my top 5 favorite projects that look super professional and don’t take much time!
BUILD A BENCH FROM 2x4s IN AN AFTERNOON
We’re planning a ton of outdoor updates for next Spring (because now is the time to start working on those plans so you can take advantage of the contractor’s slow season!). Part of our plans include a new patio and possibly a wood deck. If we build that, we know we’re going to need some additional furniture and I’ve been toying with the idea of building a patio dining set from 2x4s.
That’s why I’m so happy to see that Toni at Girl Just DIY has done basically all the hard work for me. Her tutorial features a cut and supplies list for this bench that I can easily adapt on a larger scale to make a matching dining table as well.

BUILD A PATIO TABLE WITH AN UMBRELLA HOLE
Because I know a large portion of our backyard gets full sun all day long, I also like the idea of just a really simple patio table that has some space for an umbrella.
This patio table tutorial from Brittany at By Brittany Goldwyn accommodates a standard patio umbrella and I could scale the tutorial down to build matching benches.

BUILD A STURDY KID’S PICNIC TABLE FOR WAY LESS THAN BUYING ONE
I purchased a cheap picnic table for my daughter a few years ago and now I’m mad about it. I spent $150 on the table and it lasted one season before I had to start making repairs. At this point, I realize I could’ve just built the darn table myself and saved time and money!
So don’t live with the same regrets. Put these scrap 2x4s to good use with this tutorial from Tylynn at Bitter Root DIY.

BUILD A CAFE STYLE YARD SIGN
Once a month, my family hosts a gathering on Sunday afternoons that we’ve come to call our “Sunday Open House” because we tell our friends and neighbors to just drop in any time between 11:00 and 4:00 to partake in a spread of food and casual cocktails. Recently, we moved to a new neighborhood and we haven’t met all our new neighbors. I’ve been considering building a little cafe-style sign (like the ones you see outside coffee shops) to place outside on the week leading up to our Open House as a reminder / invitation to the neighborhood that they’re welcome to drop in and be social.
After seeing the “Kid’s At Play” sign that Lindsay from Shrimp Salad Circus made, now I’m definitely putting my plans into action. Her tutorial is quick and easy and I love that the sign can be folding down to store flat when it’s not in use.

USE OLD WOOD TO BUILD A RUSTIC A-FRAME BENCH
I am a big fan of placing something at the end of your bed. Unfortunately, I’m now in a smaller house and my bedroom doesn’t really accommodate a full-sized bench.
Luckily, Sherry at Savvy Apron has exactly the right project for my small bedroom conundrum! She built this cute end-of-bed bench with some scrap wood and it looks so good but doesn’t take up a ton of space.

CREATE CHEAP PANTRY RISERS SO YOU CAN SEE ALL YOUR FOOD
This last idea is pure genius! Trying to find your dry food goods when they’re stacked 5 deep can be a real pain!
But Lisa at Shine DIY and Design figured out a really good use for all your smaller 2×4 scraps. Her idea? Use them to build pantry risers! Told you it was genius!

MY 2X4 WOOD BROOM PROJECT TUTORIAL
For this month’s challenge, I went a little crazy and had a lot of fun building a brand new wooden broom from scrap 2x4s and some recycled bristles when our old broom broke.
