How’d you come up with that? I could never be that creative. Is there anything you can’t do?

Throughout my life, I’ve heard the same statements and questions over and over again. From clients. Friends. Colleagues. Even fellow creatives! It blows my mind. It seems that half the population doubts their ability to produce while the other half says “screw it, let’s do it!”

There’s an idea that you were born with a mindset and it guides you through your life. You’re either creative or you’re not. I call bullshit. Why? Because nothing comes naturally for me either. I’ve had to learn it just like everyone else. When I started painting, I picked up paints and a brush and made some swirls and they were awful. My first few paintings were disastrous. But I didn’t put my tools away and give up. I found artists who created the work I loved and I learned the names of the styles. Then I bought books about the styles. I googled. I followed people on Pinterest. With each new discovery, I learned a new technique. We don’t expect people to perform complicated equations without first being taught how to count. So why would we expect that one can create without first learning the foundations of art?

So today, I’m sharing six Instagram accounts who have helped me hone my crafting and art skills. From painting to needlework, baking to paper crafts, these are the people who have taught me that anyone can create. It just requires foundational learning and a change in mindset.
