My Serena & Lily Inspired Dining Room Chairs

DIY HOME DECOR ON A BUDGET

Hey guys! So, that picture might be a little deceiving. It kind of seems like I’m saying I don’t like Serena & Lily or wouldn’t buy their stuff and that couldn’t be further from the truth. I but their products all the time. And I love them! Unfortunately, every project has a budget and my budget for this dining room was well under the $3,000 I would have spent on these chairs:

YES. THOSE CHAIRS. The Larchmont Dining Chairs which retail for $499 each. I needed six. That’s a lot of Larchmont, if you know what I mean. So if you can afford them, buy them. Click the link in the photo above and have at it!

Me? I’ll stick to the six chairs I paid $60 a piece for (factoring in quantity altogether, and not the paint I used).

That’s right. PAINT I USED. Because, as you might have noted from that receipt, some of these were green. The others were a natural bamboo color. So this project requires basically two things: Knowing where to find the chairs (see above and I’ll link below) and having a Carpel Tunnel physician on speed dial because there is SO MUCH PAINTING. And it’s spray painting too, so — Sorry Mother Earth! I had a dining room to make pretty!

So this is where I started. Want to buy them? Click on the image. No affiliated. The arm chairs are gone. Can’t find them anywhere on the site. I don’t know if they’re sold out, or if they committed some terrible crime and have fled to Iceland, or maybe they just forgot to check in and now they’re on Social Media punishment. It’s unclear. But I wish them luck, no matter what.

Anywho, I used approximately 10 cans of Rustoleum Satin in Midnight Blue to get the finish I wanted. I left the top of the seat unpainted and stained with three coats of clear stain polyeurethane. And then I assembled them. Can you tell which ones are mine and which are the originals?

OF COURSE YOU CAN! But that’s not really the point. The thing is, if they were perfect replicas, that would be very bad. You know why? Because someone actually designed those. They’re someone else’s work. That would be immoral to knock it off. My chairs wink at the designer, rather than shooting her the bird. Make sense?

At the end of the day, I have these glorious chairs in my home, for a tiny fraction of the price. And I love them. What do you think?
